The George and Dragon, a much-loved community pub in Lichfield, is set to unveil its brand-new space – “The Den” – tomorrow, Friday, July 25, with special VIP guest Tony Morley, ex-Aston Villa footballer and local hero, officially opening the area. The pub, owned by Admiral Taverns, the UK’s leading community pub group, is run by passionate licensee Chris Whelan.

The Den is the result of a significant £80,000 combined investment, transforming a former storeroom at the rear of the pub into a stylish and versatile new venue. The space features a dedicated bar and seating area, which can also be used for private functions. The area accommodates up to 30 guests, with the adjoining courtyard and garden extending capacity to 90 guests.

To celebrate the launch, the George and Dragon will host a Pride-themed weekend, kicking off with karaoke from 8pm on Friday 25th July and live music in The Den on Sunday, July 27.

Licensee Chris Whelan, who took over the George and Dragon in March 2024 - marking his first ever pub - has overseen the transformation, building on the pub’s reputation as a vibrant community hub.

Chris Whelan, Licensee at The George and Dragon, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with The Den. It’s a fantastic new space for our community and I can’t wait to welcome everyone for the grand opening. Having Tony Morley here to cut the ribbon is the icing on the cake!

Since taking over, I've loved every minute - the community have been so supportive, and of course Admiral Taverns, Richard Skinner and my wife, Emma - I couldn't have done this without their support."
