Key man warns Aston Villa their Champions League mission is 'not done yet'
Unai Emery’s team are closing in on a top-five Premier League finish.
Amadou Onana has warned Villa the job is “not done yet” as they target a win at Fulham which would put them on the brink of Champions League qualification.
Villa head to Craven Cottage on Saturday aiming for one of the two victories which would guarantee a top-five Premier League finish and a return to Europe’s elite club competition next season.
Unai Emery’s men have a healthy eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Brighton but Onana says they cannot afford to take their eye off the ball.
The midfielder said: “We know the job is not done until the very end. This is the Premier League and you have to fight until the end. We need to stay focused and keep working hard.”
The trip to Fulham begins a huge 12-day period in Villa’s season which also includes a Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
It is possible they could have Champions League qualification already secure by the time they host Forest in the second leg on May 7, allowing them to focus fully on ending the club’s 30-year trophy drought.
Onana said: “That would be huge for us, so that we can also kind of focus on the Europa League.
“The Premier League is the best way to get Champions League qualification and we are aware of that.
“But obviously, winning a trophy for everyone here, the club, the people, the staff and the people who work here, it would be massive. We definitely know that.”
