Wolves will wait for McLean

Wolves are prepared to sit tight and play a waiting game in their pursuit of Peterborough striker Aaron McLean.

Posh director of football Barry Fry told the Express & Star at the weekend that the asking price for the 25-year-old is a cool £5m – £3m now and £2m if they win promotion.

Wolves, who have had bids of £1m and £1.5m rejected, are convinced no one will pay the kind of inflated fee Posh want for a player unproven beyond League Two – and have told Fry.

Their opinions appear to be backed up by the former Birmingham manager, who admits their price has effectively put McLean out of reach because they don't need to sell.

Chief executive Jez Moxey insists Wolves have other irons in the fire. He has prepared to lose out on McLean rather than pay over the odds.

Fry said: "I don't think at this moment in time anyone will be prepared to stump up £5m.

"Some people might think the price is crazy, but his goalscoring record is unbelievable at any level.

"This time next year we could be talking about double that money if he has another good season.

"The fee is partly a reflection of his ability and partly to scare other clubs off.

"Our stance is we want Aaron at Posh.

"We are lucky enough to be in a position where we don't need the money. That means we can say 'no' or name our price and that is what we have done.

"I know Aaron is flattered by the interest because Wolves are a big club, but he still has three years left on his contract here.

"The chairman flew in and told Aaron face-to-face that he is not for sale unless someone comes up with the money we want."

Wolves are also moving ever closer to the £1m capture of Derby midfielder David Jones, with agreement on personal terms edging towards a deal.
