Speed limits to be slashed on 19 roads around Dudley borough - here are the details

Speed limit to be halved on one road, 20mph limits on others

Speed-limit cuts have been proposed to 19 roads across Dudley borough as part of a road-safety drive by the council.

New 20mph limits are being proposed for 14 roads in the borough, with cuts to the limit on five other major routes.

The biggest change will be in Uffmoor Lane, Hayley Green, where a 60mph national speed limit stretch will be cut to 30mph.

Furnace Lane, Whittingham Road, Newfield Lane and Newfield Crescent in Halesowen, will be subject to 20mph as part of the council’s safer routes to school programme, as will Mill Street, the Promenade and Woodbury Close in Brierley Hill.

The limit in Quarry Bank High Street, as well as surrounding roads Oak Street, Church Street, Victoria Street, Chapel Street, Queen Street and New Street will also be cut to 20mph.

In Pedmore, Ham Lane, Hagley Road and Grange Lane will have their limits reduced from 40mph to 30mph, while the dual carriageway stretch of the A456 Manor Way in Halesowen will see the limit reduced from 70mph to 60mph.

Jim Deakin, director of neighbourhoods, said the council was seeking to make school journeys safer for children, parents and carers.

“As part of our Safer Routes to School programme, we are proposing to introduce a 20mph limit on a number of named streets around schools in Halesowen and Brierley Hill,” he said.

“By reducing vehicle speeds and encouraging more considerate driving around schools, we aim to create a safer environment for pupils, helping them to travel to and from school more safely, confidently and independently.”

He added that following a review of existing speed limits, the council was proposing cuts on selected routes for consistency and for the benefit of road safety.

“We plan to reduce the speed limit on Ham Lane, Grange Lane and Hagley Road in Stourbridge from 40mph to 30mph due to their residential location.

“The existing 20mph speed limit on the lower section of Quarry Bank is proposed to be extended to cover the whole of High Street, and the national speed limit section of A456 Manor Way, in Halesowen, is to be reduced from 70mph to 60mph, to bring it in line with the adjacent sections in Worcestershire and to support police enforcement.”

The proposals - apart from in Uffmoor Lane - are now open to consultation, with residents and motorists having until November 16 to express their views.
