Wolves 1 Burnley 2 - match report

Wolves are standing on the brink of League One after a disastrous defeat to 10-man Burnley.

Danny Ings and former Molineux target Martin Paterson left Dean Saunders' team facing a second successive relegation – despite Nouha Dicko's late consolation.

A minority of supporters invaded the pitch afterwards and directed their anger at chairman Steve Morgan and defender Roger Johnson was involved in several verbal arguments.

A few fans also kicked apart advertising hoardings and briefly tried to tear down the South Bank goal.

On the pitch Wolves lacked the fight even when Burnley's Michael Duff was sent off for two yellow cards after two fouls on Kevin Doyle in the second half.

Wins for Barnsley and Huddersfield left second bottom Wolves three points from safety before Peterborough's game with Sheffield Wednesday.

They are left relying on other results while needing a win at Brighton on the final to avoid slipping into League One.

Wolves were unchanged from the 2-1 defeat at Charlton and started brightly with Tongo Doumbia shooting at Lee Grant from 30-yards after the keeper's poor clearance.

The hosts forced several corners but were unable to capitalise and the Clarets stunned Wolves after just eight minutes.

Burnley had won two corners and retained possession to finally clip the ball into the unmarked Ings who curled into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

The Wolves response was muted with Molineux reeling and Dean Marney headed over before they roused themselves.

Doumbia fired wide from distance after the lively Stephen Hunt's barnstorming run and cross but Wolves struggled to create serious openings with Burnley defending in numbers.

And Dorus De Vries kept them in it with a super save from Vokes on 24 minutes after the former Molineux striker swept Marney's cross towards goal.

Kaspars Gorkss crashed a far post header wide but Wolves lacked the quality to penetrate Burnley and relied on Grant for their next opening on 37 minutes.

Stephen Ward's hanging cross was spilled by the keeper and fell for Sigurdarson only for Grant to redeem himself with a fine block.

But if the home faithful expected a rousing second half they were rocked after the Clarets grabbed a second seven minutes after the break.

Wolves failed to clear a corner and when it was returned by Ings Paterson slammed into the roof of the net from five yards.

The hosts were handed a lifeline 12 minutes later though when Duff was dismissed for a second yellow card after felling Doyle – after he had already been booked for a similar trip on the Ireland international.

But Wolves failed to cash in and Marney was inches away from making it 3-0 when he cut inside Johnson and curled just wide from 18-yards.

Henry volleyed wide with 16 minutes to go and Doumbia was inches away from pulling one back when he steered Jack Robinson's cross off target.

There was still little fight in Wolves though, despite mounting possession, and De Vries almost handed a third to Paterson when the striker beat him to a long punt only for Gorkss to clear.

Dicko pulled a goal back with three minutes left when he slammed in from close range to set up a barnstorming finish.

Matt Doherty's shot was deflected wide and De Vries saved from Paterson after the strike broke as Wolves were left on the brink ahead of ugly scenes at the final whistle.
