Title winning Wolves keeper on lookout for new club after Premier League release

The goalkeeper spent five seasons at Molineux.

A Championship winning Wolves goalkeeper is on the lookout for a new club at the age of 39 - after his release from Premier League Newcastle United was confirmed.

John Ruddy, who played a big hand in Wolves 2017/2018 title winning campaign - has spent the last two seasons with the Magpies as a back up goalkeeper.

During his time at the club, the one cap England shot stopper, was the club’s third choice keeper and was never called upon, but was praised by manager Eddie Howe for being a big influence in the dressing room.

The club announced his departure on Tuesday, after the goalkeeper had himself confirmed earlier in the week that his time at St James’ Park had come to an end.

The Premier League side also officially confirmed the departure of Kieran Trippier, who last week gave Wolves a verbal agreement that he is going to sign a two year contract at the club this summer.

Ruddy’s departure from the North East comes eight years after he played a starring role for Wolves’ title winning campaign in 2018.

He arrived at he club from Norwich, where he had previously won the Championship play-offs.

He featured in all but one of the league games that season as Nuno’s side went on to win the title. One of the highlights of the campaign for Ruddy came in April 2018, when he saved an injury time penalty against Cardiff to send Wolves nine points clear.

He was named in the PFA Team of the Year, before going on to earn the EFL’s Golden Glove Award for his 24 clean sheets.
