Former Wolves stalwart outlines Premier League ambition after Championship switch
The long-serving defender clocked up almost 400 appearances for the club.
Former Wolves star Matt Doherty has outlined a determination to return to the Premier League after agreeing a one-year contract at Sheffield United.
The full-back makes the switch to Bramall Lane after departing Molineux on a free transfer this summer following 13 years with Wolves across two spells.
The 34-year-old, whose deal includes an option of another 12 months, will face off against Wolves in the second tier this season and has promotion aspirations under Chris Wilder with the Blades.
"I spoke to the manager and had a walk round the stadium, obviously I've played there (Bramall Lane) many times before so I know what the atmosphere can be and the manager convinced me with his vision of the team and the club,” Doherty said.
"I'm backing the manager to get the club back into the Premier League and I'm guessing that is the goal for everyone at the end of the day. I believe in him and what he's saying to me, and I know he'll believe in his players.”
The 53-cap Republic of Ireland man made 389 appearances for Wolves across his two spells, which spanned between 2010 and 2020 and then 2023 to 2026.
In between his stints his played for Tottenham and Atletico Madrid.
Doherty initially cost Wolves just £75,000 from Bohemians in Dublin in 2010.
He was a League One and Championship title-winner with the club, played European football at Molineux and Wolves described him as a “club legend” upon his departure.
Sheffield United finished 13th in the Championship last season.
Blades boss Wilder said: "There's no doubting we are getting a player here who knows what it takes to be successful.
"You've got to be a seriously good player to have played as many times as he has for the likes of Wolves, Spurs and Atletico Madrid.
"Matt is a top pro on and off the pitch, he still has a real desire to achieve things in his career, and he wants to do that here.
"He'll drive those standards we are looking for and bring the best out of others in the squad. I've talked about culture carriers a lot over the years, and that's what I see in Matt."
