Matt Doherty: Wolves fans are driving us on

Wolves' large support both home and away is helping drive the team on, Matt Doherty believes.

Almost 6,000 fans travelled to Preston on Saturday and more than 4,000 will be at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Molineux's last two matches have been sell-outs and there'll be another big crowd for tomorrow's visit of Norwich.

Doherty said: "When you're doing well, Wolves fans will follow you everywhere. Games like QPR at home you wouldn't necessarily think it's a sell out and it is.

"As footballers you love playing in front of full houses or big away support like that. It really drives you on."

Wolves drew 1-1 at 10-man Preston on Saturday with Helder Costa's equaliser cancelling out Alan Browne's headed opener.

Doherty said it was difficult to break down Alex Neil's team despite having an extra man for 30 minutes.

"When they've got 10 men and dropping deep it's hard to get in behind, which is our game," he added.

"We tried different avenues to get in and they just defended really well.

"Not every game is going to fall into place for you.

"We didn't create anything too clear cut towards the end, so we'll take a point.

"They're a good team, they've been on a decent run and it was a typical, tough Championship game.

"It was disappointing to concede from a set piece. We've been weak at set pieces at the start of the season, we seemed to have nipped it in the bud.

"I think we were going to get back in the game anyway but the sending off obviously helped.

"We came into it really backing ourselves to win. We knew it'd be tough.

"I always thought we'd get a chance, even before they scored.

"It was a shock (when they scored) but we reacted well."

Doherty is enjoying a consistent campaign at right wing back, playing 34 times in all competitions.

"I feel okay at the moment," he added.

"Some days you can go into a game feeling a little bit sluggish. Some days you can just be flying.

"Lately I've felt alright going into the games. I get a bit tired sometimes but that's just part of the job, it's what we have to do. I wouldn't change it for anything.

"I've never played in a better squad. If I did I'd probably be in the Premier League already."

Doherty's good friend Benik Afobe made his third Wolves appearance on Saturday since returning to the club.

Doherty thinks one goal will lead to a few more for the 25-year-old striker.

"He's come on a couple of times and almost scored two goals," Doherty said. "Once one goes in it'll only be a matter of time before he starts scoring.

"It's not just on the pitch (where it's good to have him back), off the pitch also. We both have kids at a similar age, our girlfriends know each other so it's happy days all round.
