West Brom's extended international break plans with friendly confirmed

Half of Albion’s squad is jetting all over the globe in this more unusual international break.

James Morrison has offered his Albion squad a week’s breather with a friendly to take place during the extended three-week international break.

The Baggies are not in action again until they welcome Birmingham City on October 10, meaning more time to stew on Sunday’s Molineux disappointment.

Albion players began a week off following a hectic start to the season on Monday and will return for work at the beginning of next week.

Head coach Morrison was minded to offer his players some respite after a run of fixtures in August and September featuring lengthy travel and a regular run of midweek clashes, offering little time for much else than preparation and recovery.

At the end of the second week of the break Albion will play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against currently unnamed opposition.

The practice match will take place on the weekend of October 3/4.

But Morrison will be without around half of his senior squad for the friendly and much of the training between now and the return to action against Blues at The Hawthorns.

Ten members of the Baggies’ first-team squad are heading away with their nations.

Two - top scorer Jimmy-Jay Morgan and fellow striker Barney Stewart - are away on youth international duty with England under-20s and Scotland under-21s respectively.

Also called up by their nations are Republic of Ireland duo Max O’Leary, the goalkeeper fresh from his heroics in the 1-0 defeat at Wolves, and Jayson Molumby.

Central defender Chris Mepham is away with Wales and full-back Callum Styles has earned another Hungary call.

Midfielder Ousmane Diakite can add to his single cap for Mali, while there is an opportunity to do likewise for club captain George Campbell with the United States of America.

Isaac Price will go away with Northern Ireland.

Albion fringe player Tammer Bany, who has struggled with minutes once again this season and is yet to feature in the Championship, has another call for Jordan, with whom he won a first cap last year.

New signing right-back Brayann Pereira will not go away with African nation Congo, it is understood.

The uncapped Peraira is French-born but of Congolese heritage. He played youth football for France but was named in Congo’s squad this month, however it has been decided he will not go away with the nation.

“We’ll have a break,” Morrison said of the break, which was decided before the Molineux defeat. “It is not a normal international break, it’s something we’re going to have to prepare for in what we do.

“I don’t want to get imbalanced in terms of fitness. As footballers, or being involved in football, it’s very regimented and, when there is a little bit of change, everyone goes ‘oof!’.

“I welcome the break, the lads deserve a break. It’s an opportunity to get work into certain individuals and let them settle in.

“I still think we have got to try and get to another level and try and think of different ways to keep the opposition guessing. We don’t want to be one-dimensional, we want to be flexible. It’s just about getting everyone up to speed and on the same level.

“We’ll have a week off, then a week in with a game at the end on the Saturday and then a normal week (pre-Birmingham City) after that.”
