Tony Brown: Saido Berahino howler the stuff of nightmares

Tony 'Bomber' Brown reckons Saido Berahino's missed header against Manchester United will be keeping the young striker awake at night.

Berahino somehow managed to balloon over an unmarked header from just six yards out when the score was still 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Albion's all-time record scorer said 99 per cent of the time, the Burundi-born marksman would have stuck the chance away.

And if that goal had gone in, Bomber is sure Albion would have shut up shop and held out for a point.

"Unfortunately Saido makes a mess of it and he'll know himself he should have scored," said Brown. "It's one of them, he'll go to bed and he'll go through that goal time after time after time.

"Ninety-nine times out of a hundred he'll score.

"Unfortunately he didn't and that's really probably cost us the draw because I don't think they'd have got their second goal if Saido had scored.

"We wouldn't have been throwing the men forward and leaving ourselves exposed at the back and that's what happens when you chase games.

"Sometimes you leave yourself open a little bit at the back and that's how they got the penalty."

Bomber was disappointed with Albion's lacklustre threat going forward, although there was one attacking player who's all-round game impressed him.

"It was just a little bit disappointing because I think that was the only chance we really had in the whole game, wasn't it? A clear-cut chance and we didn't take it," said the Albion legend.

"There were some good performances in defence and to be honest I've got to give credit to Stephane Sessegnon.

"I thought he did well going forward and defending.

"I thought he did the job in that wide position that the manager demands, working both ways, and I thought he did well, So praise to the lad."

Albion lost Gareth McAuley to a straight red card in the 90th minute when he fouled Anthony Martial in the box.

The Northern Irish defender will subsequently be banned for three games, which will be a huge miss according to Bomber.

"It's desperation I think, it's tiredness at the end there, his despairing challenge to try and stop the goal," said Brown. "He's mistimed it and you finish up getting a red card which is the last thing we needed.

"I've said many times this season I don't think we're really the same when Gareth's not in the back four.

"He does ever so well, he's like a magnet when those balls are coming into the box and he'll be a big miss but unfortunately we've got to get over that."
