'No chance': Ex-West Brom hotshot reveals audacious Wolves transfer swoop before £5m move

Former West Brom striker has revealed a story regarding an audacious transfer approach from Wolves.

Lee Hughes was hot property at West Brom back in 2001 - coming off the back of a season where he scored 23 goals for Albion.

The Smethwick born striker who signed for Albion in the 1990s - went on to become the club’s prized asset, scoring 86 goals in 177 games across four seasons.

He eventually went on to sign for Coventry City for £5,000,001, after they met his buy out clause.

But the striker has now revealed how former Wolves boss Dave Jones made an audacious approach to try and bring him to Molineux.

Promotion winning boss Jones tried to persuade Hughes with the lure of higher wages, and according to the striker, he said: “Don’t you know how big this club is?”

In a video shared on Hughes’ TikTok page, the former striker, who was also an Albion fan, insisted the story hasn’t been revealed before and that there was ‘no chance’ he was ever going to sign for Wolves.

He insisted he would have been booed by the home fans and could never have made the move.

He said: “I was at West Bromwich Albion, and Coventry came in for £5,000,001 - next thing you know, I got a phone call, it was Dave Jones, the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager.

"I thought it was a joke at first, and then he said to me; 'Lee, Dave Jones here from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Would you be interested in signing for Wolves from West Brom?'

"Considering I was top goalscorer at West Brom for a few years, and he wanted me to sign for Wolves, he said; 'I know Coventry have offered over £5 million - we'll match that, and we'll give you more wages.'

“If I played for Wolves, I’d get booed by the home fans and booed by the away fans’

“In the end I had to put the phone down on him, I couldn’t believe the audacity he had thinking I could sign for Wolves, there was not a chance.

“That would have been absolute crazy for me to sign for Wolves, and from West Brom, being the top goalscorer and supporting the club.”
