Dave Kemp: We're trying to rectify West Brom's attacking deficiencies

Albion assistant Dave Kemp says the coaching staff is trying to rectify the team's deficiencies in front of goal.

The Baggies were humbled 2-1 by non-league Torquay United at Plainmoor tonight in the driving rain.

Summer signing Matt Phillips grabbed his first goal for the club but it was a consolation prize after Torquay had stunned the Baggies with two superb solo goals in six minutes.

It was the only goal Albion scored in their Devon double-header, after a 0-0 with League Two Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

And Kemp admitted that creativitiy and finishing was a problem.

"We do lack quality around the opposition's goal, we're aware of that and we're trying to rectify that," he said.

"I thought we showed a lot of attacking intent. We have only scored one goal, we could have scored quite a few but didn't.

"We need to be doing that."

Albion didn't look threatening until Phillips came on and the winger clipped the crossbar before netting his first goal in Albion colours.

"He got a good goal, he looked bright, put some really good crosses in," said Kemp. "That's what we want him to do, he's shown that he's capable of doing that.

"Hopefully he'll take that into Crystal Palace game."

Phillips' performance was one of few positives on a disappointing night, but Kemp wasn't fussed about the result.

"Pre season is irrelevant," said Kemp. "Tell me the results last pre-season.

"No-one remembers pre-season, it's not about that, it's about the 38 games in the Premier League and hope you have a run in the cups.

"This is preparation time, that's the fact.

"As a professional you don't want to be losing games, but this is the first game we've lost in pre-season.

"It's not like we've lost six straight and don't look like we can play.

"These things happen and on to the next one."
