Walsall legend Jimmy Walker back on duty for charity fundraiser

Walsall's all-time record appearance holder Jimmy Walker made his return in a Saddlers shirt yesterday – helping raise more than £2,000 for charity in the process.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper made his debut for the club's Legends team as they took on fans team AFC Cambridge at the Railway Club in Pleck.

Walker, who made 534 appearances in two spells at the club, was joined by fellow former Saddlers favourites Ian Roper, Mark Rees, Mark Taylor, Martin O'Connor and Andy Reece as the Legends ran out 4-0 winners.

The game was organised in memory of Pc Julie Skidmore who served in the Black Country during her 30-year career in the force, and who lost her six-year battle with ovarian cancer in February.

AFC Cambridge Swifts are a newly-formed club consisting mainly of Walsall fans who travel to home and away matches.

The money was raised by match fees, admission, a raffle, an auction and donations.

Joint organiser of the match, which raised funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, Wayne Bowes said: "We had just over 200 people come out and watch the game and our initial count shows we have raised more than £2,000."
