Dean Smith urges Walsall FC to put pressure on play-off rivals Peterborough

Dean Smith today challenged Walsall to pile the pressure on play-off rivals Peterborough by beating Shrewsbury tomorrow.

The Saddlers could close the gap on sixth-placed Posh to two points with a win as their rivals are not in league action this weekend.

Darren Ferguson's men face Chesterfield in Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final and though they will then have two games in hand over the chasing pack, Smith is keen to turn up the heat.

"There is a psychological side to it and you have still got to go and win games," he said. "After every round of matches the picture changes and it is getting nearer the pressure time. Games are running out so winning becomes more important. Certainly the points tally does matter because you can put pressure on your rivals."

Smith, however, would not be drawn on how many wins he thinks his side will need from the final seven games, adding: "We will just take one game at a time and see where we are, that is all we can do. With the top five getting so many points, the total for sixth place might be a little less than it has been in the past."

Forward Milan Lalkovic (hamstring) faces a late test after coming off at half-time during Tuesday's 2-0 win at Bradford.
