Jon Macken was today ruled out of Walsall's clash with Scunthorpe after failing to shake off a hamstring strain.

The Saddlers hoped the striker would be fit to face the Iron on Saturday but scans confirmed he will be sidelined until next week.

Macken missed Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Oldham but boss Dean Smith backed him to return at Colchester on September 24.

"Jon is still struggling. Macka should be back before Claude (Gnakpa) so hopefully they won't be too long," said Smith, who is already without Gnakpa, out with another hamstring strain.

"In terms of this weekend it'll be too soon. We've had the results from the scan and it'll be too early. It's not worth risking Jon because he could end up being out for a month if you do.

"We're hoping for the Colchester game for him."
