United are keen on the industrious Scotsman, and believe he could re-energise their midfield.

But Dean Smith sees the former Hibs player, who cost £2.75million last summer, as a crucial cog in his plans for Villa’s return to the Premier League.

The club have no intention of selling the 24-year-old, who won player of the year last season, and it would take a huge offer to bring them to the table.

They are focused on strengthening their squad, and are expected to complete the signing of left-back Matt Targett this week.

The 23-year-old arrives from Southampton in search of regular football in a deal worth £11m up front rising to a potential £17m with add-ons.
