Doctor confirms 'devastating' extent of Aston Villa man's injury

The midfielder is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Belgium’s team doctor has confirmed the “devastating” extent of Villa midfielder Amadou Onana’s knee injury.

The 24-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing for his country in their 4-1 World Cup win over the USA.

Onana is now poised for an extended rehabilitation and expected to miss the majority of the 2026-27 season for Villa.

The club and Belgium’s medical staff have been in discussions over the best way to proceed.

Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene explained: "Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament.

“This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team.

"We immediately consulted with Amadou and with Aston Villa to agree on the best approach to his recovery.

"Over the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his medical treatment and rehabilitation. Throughout this process, we will continue to provide Amadou with our full support."

Onana’s injury is a major blow to Villa, who may now need to address his long-term absence in the transfer market.

The club was already facing a difficult summer as they aim to stay within Uefa’s financial fair play parameters.

Midfield had not been a key area of recruitment but now could be after Onana’s injury.
