Aston Villa to assess duo after injuries overshadow friendly win

The club were playing their second match of a pre-season tour in Thailand.

Villa will check on the fitness of Alejandro Garnacho and John McGinn after both suffered injury in Tuesday’s pre-season win over Pathum United.

Garnacho was forced off before the break after taking a stray elbow to the face, while McGinn came off in the second half after appearing to hurt his left knee.

The skipper walked off the pitch following treatment and appeared ready to return before boss Unai Emery ordered him to stay off for the remainder of the match.

Both players will be assessed ahead of Friday’s friendly against Bayern Munich, the final match of the club’s tour of the Far East.

The injuries overshadowed Villa’s victory over Pathum in Bangkok, which was otherwise notable for the goalscoring return of Boubacar Kamara.

Kamara netted their third goal of the evening just a minute after coming off the bench, for what was his first action since suffering a serious knee injury in an FA Cup win at Tottenham in January.

Emi Buendia and Victor Lindelof had earlier been on the mark for Villa in the first half, with Leon James then scoring a late consolation for the home side after Kamara had found the target.

Kamara later told VillaTV: “It feels good to be back. I have been waiting for this moment.

“I worked hard during my rehab to come back stronger, so I am happy to be here today.

“I’m not expected to score, so it is good for the head. It gives me more confidence and I need to keep going.”
