Aston Villa star Emi Martinez set to miss out on Manchester United move
Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez’s hopes of a deadline day move to Manchester United appear to be over after the latter agreed a deal to sign Senne Lammens from Antwerp.
Lammens is travelling from Belgium to join the Red Devils in a deal worth an initial £18.1million.
United had been deciding whether to pursue a move for either Lammens or Martinez and have now gone for the former.
That leaves Martinez, who was left out of Villa’s team for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, in an awkward position having made clear his desire to leave.
Boss Unai Emery took the decision to omit the Argentina international, later claiming he was not “100 per cent” focused amid the speculation over his future.
Villa may now look to find Martinez another destination in the final hours of the window, though striking a deal at this late stage is difficult, with the club also needing to bring in a replacement.
Lammens, ironically, was on Villa’s list had United opted to go for Martinez. So too was Porto’s Diogo Costa but such a deal would always be dependent on Villa selling their current No.1.
In the meantime, Villa are close to completing a loan deal for United winger Jadon Sancho and are in talks with Liverpool over the loan signing of midfielder Harvey Elliott.
