Injury crisis prompts non-league club to cancel two pre-season matches
Hednesford Town have cancelled two friendly matches scheduled for this week after being hit by a pre-season injury crisis.
The Pitmen were due to play at Stoubridge on Tuesday night and then away at Barwell on Friday but both matches have been called off.
In a statement, the Northern Premier League club explained they had taken the decision to allow those players carrying injuries more time to recover ahead of the new campaign.
Supporters who had bought tickets for Tuesday’s match at Stourbridge will be reimbursed. The Glassboys will instead welcome Shifnal Town to Stourton Park (kick-off 7.45pm).
Hednesford’s statement read: “It’s not a decision we’ve taken lightly, but with several players carrying injuries from the last few weeks and needing more time to recover and return to full training, we need to look after our squad ahead of the new season.
“We've had a solid start to pre-season, but right now, it’s about recovery, preparation, and keeping the focus on a strong start to the league campaign.”
The Pitmen, who won promotion back to the third tier of non-league football last season, are due to play at AFC Wulfrunians on Saturday and at the moment that match is going ahead as planned.
Gavin Hurren’s team round-off their pre-season schedule by hosting AFC Telford United at Keys Park on Tuesday, July 29 and then a PFA Showcase squad on Saturday, August 2.
They open their league campaign away at Hebburn Town on Saturday, August 9.
