Walsall were today set to complete the signing of Albion forward Reuben Reid.

The 22-year-old is poised to pen a loan deal, although the length is yet to be confirmed, at the Banks's Stadium as the Saddlers boost their forward line.

And Reid could make his debut against former club Plymouth on Saturday.

Baggies sources confirmed a deal was imminent, as the final paperwork gets approved by the Football Association and Football League.

Walsall are also confident of sealing another transfer today, with Jon Macken believed to be high on the wanted list after spending the last week training with the team.

Both deals are likely to be done by the end of the day in time for the new-boys to make their debuts at the Banks's Stadium on Saturday.

Saddlers boss Chris Hutchings confirmed this morning he was hoping to tie up a double deal but remained tight-lipped over his targets.

He said: "We're hoping by the end of the day of having something sorted out. If it happens great, if it doesn't we'll move on.

"By the end of the day we will possibly have two players."

Reid began his career as a striker but enjoyed his most impressive season, at Rotherham, as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation, scoring 19 goals in 51 appearances for the Millers during 2008-09.

The youngster became Roberto Di Matteo's first signing as Albion boss, after the Italian was impressed by the pacy wideman's displays for Rotherham against his Milton Keynes Dons side.

But Reid, who began his career with Plymouth, was unable to force his way into the Baggies' starting line-up during their Championship promotion campaign and was sent out on loan to Peterborough.

The attacker has also spent time on loan at Kidderminster Harriers, Brentford, Wycombe and Torquay.

Albion's promotion to the Premier League and the imminent arrivals of African stars Peter Odemwingie and Somen Tchoyi have pushed him further down the Hawthorns pecking order.

The Baggies are now keen to secure him regular first team football and a move to their near neighbours will provide them with the opportunity to monitor his progress at close quarters.

Macken is favourite to become the Saddlers' second signing, after the 32-year-old expressed a desire to earn a deal at Walsall.
