16:55: Mostly heartbreak for our teams in the region today and none more so than Villa, who hopes of a Champions League spot lay in tatters after defeat at Manchester City.

The claret and blues need a minor miracle now to make the top four after City nudged two points clear of their visitors and to within one of fourth-placed Tottenham, and both have a game in hand but against each other.

There was no better news from Fratton Park, where the tables were turned on Wolves who led and then collapsed to a 3-1 defeat against already-relegated Portsmouth.

Even Walsall were pegged back as they went in search of their first League One win in eight games at Carlisle, but gave away an equaliser after taking an early lead.

The only good news was for Birmingham, who beat Burnley in the early Premier League kick-off to all but seal their highest finish since 1959.

Albion play out their Championship promotion season against Barnsley at the Hawthorns tomorrow.

14:45: Birmingham's season is just getting better and better as they edge closer to their highest league finish for 51 years after another win at home to Burnley, after nudging ahead and never looking back.

Blues were two up by half-time after an own goal from away goalkeeper Brian Jensen and a strike from Christian Benitez, while Steven Thompson's goal was mere consolation for Burnley.
