Signs plan could stop confusion of sat nav

Signs warning drivers against obeying sat nav directions could be trialled in the Wyre Forest, where lorries keep travelling down a "no-through road".
Signs warning drivers against obeying sat nav directions could be trialled in the Wyre Forest, where lorries keep travelling down a "no-through road".
The signs have already been installed in some areas by the Vale of Glamorgan Council to warn heavy goods vehicle drivers of the dangers of relying on satellite navigation aids.
With the increasing use of such systems, drivers, particularly those from overseas, are following directions and causing problems on country roads and in towns such as Kidderminster.
Glamorgan is the first to trial the new pictorial signs featuring a lorry and a satellite with a red line warning not to obey the instructions of sat nav systems.
Now Worcestershire could follow and officials are currently considering using the signs after several drivers have been caught using routes clearly signed as unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles.
People in Kidderminster claim drivers are being sent down Offmore Lane from Chester Road North and when they find themselves stuck have to reverse out again in manoeuvres posing a danger.
A county council spokesman said highways officials are "considering using signs to stop the problem".
