An office block in Wolverhampton city centre suffered smoke damage this morning when a blaze broke out.

Firefighters were called to a fire at a Wolverhampton solicitors firm in George Street at around 7.30am.

The fire started in the ground floor entrance hall of the building causing black smoke to billow out from the front door.

It is thought to have started as a result of a faulty light fitting and spread onto the hall carpet. Two firefighters from Wolverhampton Fire Station tended to the blaze using a CO2 extinguisher and a hose reel jet.

West Midlands Fire Control spokesman Matthew Smith said: "A ventilation fan was then used to clear the large amount of smoke from the building.

"The electrics were isolated to make the property safe."

Electrical engineers were on the scene to determine the extent of the damage.
