A lorry driver who hit a car and narrowly avoided other vehicles in his path before assaulting a police officer has been jailed.

Jurijs Pirogovs, 52, from Wolverhampton, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Stafford Crown Court on Thursday, July 31 after pleading guilty to driving a vehicle dangerously, assault by beating of an emergency worker, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence, failing to stop after a road accident, and using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without third party insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for 21 months.

Staffordshire Police officers went to the Lammascote Road area of the town, just after 6.30pm, on Monday, 22 July last year, following reports that an articulated lorry had been in collision with a car.

A short time later, officers located the vehicle and trailer on Foregate Street. They followed it to Lichfield Road, where they brought it to a stop safely.

Once out of the cab, Pirogovs kicked a police officer.

Footage from Pirogovs’ own dashcam later revealed that he had gone through a red traffic light, straddled multiple lanes, hit a kerb, and cut across traffic causing other road users to break, or take evasive action.
