They say age is no barrier when it comes to love. Herbert Spencer knows this better than most after tying the knot at the ripe old age of 92 with his bride Millicent Lee – 30 years his junior.

The happy couple said 'I do' at the white wedding ceremony they prayed for at the Bethel Lighthouse Church in Walsall after a romance that spanned the Atlantic Ocean.

They got engaged on July 4 last year after Millicent, who lives in Michigan, America, came to spend time with relatives who attend the same Caldmore Road church as Herbert.

The pair had met 12 months earlier, hit it off and began courting.

Herbert said: "I've known her for a while because she's been coming over from America to visit but when she came last year I asked her to marry me.

"Before she said yes she told me she would pray about it and then she asked me if I truly loved her and I told her that I did.

"Saturday was our big day. We had more than 100 guests and we had the reception in the church's own restaurant.

"The wedding was really nice and the best day of my life. I never thought that at my age I would be getting married again." The father-of-seven's first wife Pearleta died at the age of 80 in 2007. They had been married for 47 years. Herbert, a retired British Rail maintenance worker, of Bescot Street, Palfrey, said he was looking forward to many happy years with his new wife. They had five bridesmaids and four groomsmen while Herbert's youngest son Delroy, aged 46, was the best man. Home care worker Millicent, aged 62, said: "Herbert is jovial and really good company.

"He certainly doesn't act like a 92-year-old. He's young for his age. He says I make him happy and we have a laugh. It's the first time that I have been married. He calls me his 'dove' and 'his breath of fresh air'. I really do love him."

Millicent has two children, Angela, 46, who works at the Manor Hospital in Walsall and son Sylvester, 45, who lives in Jamaica.
