More than five million Brits are planning a holiday at home for the Bank Holiday weekend, a survey by Visit England reveals.

They will be making the most of the three-day weekend and, for the majority of families, it will include an overnight trip.

It's estimated that these 'holiday at home' breaks will help to generate about £1.25 billion for the UK economy, of which £1.1billion will be spent in England.

Visit England's Bank Holiday Trip Tracker survey showed that 3.6 million people are still undecided about whether to take an overnight holiday trip in England over the Bank Holiday weekend.

About 40 per cent say they are waiting to see what the weather is like and about 20 per cent like to decide at the last minute.

Visit Britain-Visit England director Patricia Yates said: "Record numbers of Brits have been taking their holidays at home this year.

"With so much going on this summer the August Bank Holiday weekend is another chance to enjoy a great holiday whether on a seaside, countryside or city break."

Earlier this year, VisitEngland launched its domestic marketing campaign for 2016 to get more Brits to holiday at home.

The campaign inspires people to share images of their own amazing holiday moments in the UK using the hashtag #OMGB.

These are then shared on social media across Visit England's Twitter, Instagram and Facebook platforms.

Events that are expecting to draw in the crowds over the weekend include Notting Hill Carnival, the Asylum Steampunk Festival in Lincoln and Dartmoor Walking Festival in Devon.

Visit England commissions online omnibus surveys periodically in order to collect data on the number of GB consumers who plan to take an overnight trip at key times throughout the year.
