Poll: Should those charged with motoring offences be publicly 'named and shamed' on Twitter?
The annual crackdown on drink driving over the festive season has been launched.
West Midlands Police is using a new drug testing kit for the first time this year and will again be naming and shaming those charged with driving under the influence.
Meanwhile, Staffordshire Police has released a hard-hitting video of a drink driver who was left with horrific injuries after crashing his car.
Inspector Greg Jennings, who heads up the festive campaign for West Midlands Police, said: "Drink driving is a continuing problem despite all of the successes in reducing the number of offenders over the years.
"However, it's not just drink driving that kills and injures – we see too many people who seem to think it is acceptable to drive when they are using, or have recently used, cannabis and other illegal drugs. Drugs impair reaction times just as much as drinking and so we will be out to catch those who illegally possess, use and drive with illegal drugs in their system. Our ultimate aim is to make the roads safer for everyone."
Officers will be using a new drug testing kit this year. The equipment gives an indication of whether cannabis has been used and is the first step in developing equipment and laws to reduce drug harm on the roads. The force will again be naming every person who is charged with a drink or drug driving offence through to the campaign's end at New Year.
Staffordshire Police's video tells the story of Harrison King, who after a night out, drove at speed through the centre of Uttoxeter – a ride which ended with his Ford Fiesta crashing into a house and railings, from which a metal pole crashed through his windscreen. A severe wound to the side of his head was one of his injuries, requiring him to be put into an induced coma.
