South Staffordshire village could get first padel courts under new plans - among this week's applications

The new facilities are earmarked for existing tennis court and play area space at the site.

A South Staffordshire village could get its first dedicated padel centre if plans are given the green light.

An application has come forward to construct four padel courts and a reception area to the rear of Kids Funworld at Smestow Bridge Industrial Estate in Bridgnorth Road.

The new facilities are earmarked for existing tennis court and play area space at the site.

A design, access and planning statement submitted as part of the application to South Staffordshire District Council said: “The proposal will bring the first dedicated padel facility to Wombourne, introducing a fast-growing racquet sport to the settlement and providing a new sport and leisure use within an established industrial estate.

“The development makes efficient use of existing estate land and complements the mix of commercial uses already present at Smestow Bridge.

“Wombourne Padel will operate as a pay-to-play padel facility, with courts bookable in advance via an online booking platform. The reception building provides a staffed welcome point together with changing, toilet and small ancillary facilities for players; it is not intended to operate as a bar, restaurant or function venue, and no such use is applied for.

“The facility is proposed to operate between 6am and 11pm, seven days a week, with court floodlighting timed to switch off at 11pm so that no play, associated noise or external lighting continues later into the evening.

“Car parking is provided within the site; given that the majority of existing estate units operate during standard daytime working hours, demand for the padel facility — expected to be heaviest during evenings and weekends — is unlikely to coincide with, or compete with, existing peak parking demand elsewhere on the estate.”
