An intruder climbed into the grounds of a Black Country school as pupils sat in lessons.

Parents found out when they arrived at the gates of Oakham Junior and Infants School in Tividale to pick up their children.

Letters to them explained that an unknown man was tackled by staff while in the school grounds and the police were called.

The man - thought to be homeless - scaled a wall to enter the grounds.

One concerned parent, who did not wish to be named said: "I couldn't believe it when I heard, your blood goes cold when you think what could have happened."

"It is terrifying that someone can get access that easily and something needs to be done about it."

Headteacher Phil Jones admitted someone had been caught trespassing on Wednesday. He said: "A man who looked as though he had been living rough climbed over a fence at the back of the school, was seen by staff and escorted to the front gate.

"We immediately called police who quickly arrived and took him away. They contacted us afterwards to say he did not have any criminal record. We are looking into how to make the back area more secure."
