Mick Murphy, who has been head at the Chester Avenue school for 18 years, described it is a place where "people really matter".

"I can't show you great big shiny buildings, I can't show you things that cost a lot of money but I can show you really happy children", the headteacher explained.

"I was taught by my very first headteacher who I worked for that 'happy children are children who learn' and that is something I have carried with me all the way through my career.

"We have a laugh and a joke and it makes for really well-rounded people so I think it is just a happy school - that is the most important thing."

The motto at Claregate Primary, near Tettenhall, is to 'inspire tomorrow today', with the words proudly displayed on the school's walls.

Mr Murphy said the motto is about helping the more than 440 pupils at Claregate Primary to become "rounded people". One way the school achieves this is by teaching youngsters life skills during forest school sessions.
