Family pay tribute to popular musician who died after Birmingham blaze, as gross negligence arrest made

A man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the death of a musician who was found after a building blaze in Birmingham.

Louis Campbell, aged 63, who was also known as Louis Poet, died following the blaze at a property in Barr Street in Hockley on August 17.

West Midlands Police said the fire was not started deliberately, but a man aged in his 60s had been arrested yesterday (September 3) on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. 

He has since been released on police bail as inquiries including a joint probe with the fire service continues.

Mr Campbell performed with the ska reggae bands The International Beat, Dub Rokkaz and Citizen X and was well known on the region's spoken word scene.

Paying tribute his family stated: "We are devastated by the sudden and unexpected passing of our much-loved Louis Campbell, known to many as Louis Poet.

"He was truly one of a kind — cherished amongst his brothers and sisters and a devoted uncle to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. His loss has left a deep and irreplaceable hole in our lives. 

"Louis had a rare gift for accepting people exactly as they were, with a giving nature that touched everyone he met. He shared a loving, long-term partnership with Kirsty, who knew him as a steadfast companion and constant support. 

"Beyond family, Louis was a vibrant presence in Birmingham’s music and poetry scene. With his studio in the heart of the city, he opened doors for others, mentoring new talent and creating a space where creativity could thrive.

"From performing with International Beat to countless open-mic nights in many of our city’s pubs and venues, his voice and spirit brought people together. We, his brothers, sisters and family, will miss him more than words can ever express. His absence has left us heartbroken, and we are struggling to come to terms with such a devastating loss."

The family also praised the policeand the fire brigade for their support. "Their guidance has been invaluable in helping us through this difficult time, and we deeply appreciate the care and professionalism they have shown."
