To mark the celebration the Staffordshire theme park’s operator is hosting a special summer holiday challenge from August 16 -23. Thrill seekers can take on the Merlin's Straight Face Challenge by successfully keeping a straight face during a rollercoaster ride which the brothers failed to do, before sharing their official on-ride photo on social media.

Jedward says: "We had such a jepic day taking on two of the world’s toughest rollercoasters in Hyperia and The Smiler, both pushing our hairspray to its limits to keep our quiffs in one piece. “We are officially issuing the challenge to everyone in the UK, to get to Thorpe Park, Alton Towers Resort, Chessington World of Adventures or Legoland Windsor Resort, ride a coaster and try the Straight Face Challenge to celebrate National Rollercoaster Day.

“Rollercoasters are just too joyful. We dare you to try your best not to crack and see if you can beat our attempt for the chance to win the best prize ever, free rollercoaster rides for a year with a Platinum Merlin Annual Pass.”

The guests with the best attempts will be in with a chance to win a year of free rides with a annual pass worth £299.

Jedward were put the the test by park staff and failed in spectacular fashion after taking on The Smiler’s 14 loops at Alton Towers Resort and 81mph Hyperia at Thorpe Park.

Merlin researchers claim that 69 per cent of Brits say rollercoasters make them happier, while almost half say they laugh more on a coaster than watching a comedy film.

National Rollercoaster Day will be on Sunday (August 16). Merlin attractions include Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and Legoland Windsor.

Filming while on rides at Merlin attractions is banned for visitors. To take part in the Straight Face Challenge riders must purchase an official on-ride photo before sharing it on social platforms using #StraightFaceChallenge for the chance to win.

Day tickets start from £34.13.
