Fans and organisers were left disappointed when torrential rain washed out the biggest game in the history of a cricket club near Wolverhampton.

Staff at Himley Cricket Club had been expecting up to 1,500 people to watch a 20/20 game between Worcestershire and Glamorgan – but only a fraction of that number braved the conditions.

Fans were urged to bring deckchairs and rugs to sit on but the only thing they needed was an umbrella in the filthy weather.

The match was called off at 5.30pm – the scheduled start time – after more than two hours of heavy rain. Himley bosses had spent a week preparing the ground, putting up marquees and organising temporary bars and an ice cream van.

The club spent £600 on traffic measures outside its Wolverhampton Road ground but chiefs said they would not be out of pocket.

Himley chairman Gordon Lewis said: "We won't have lost anything. Worcestershire are quite happy that nothing more could have been done to stage the game.
