Officers from the local Willenhall policing team detained Ian Bennett after carrying out enquiries into a number of thefts in August and October.

The 38-year-old, from Finery Road, Darlaston, has been charged with five counts of shop theft and is next due to appear before Walsall Magistrates Court on December 3.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said the force was continuing to tackle retail crime across the force region.

They said: "We’re catching hundreds more suspected shop thieves in the West Midlands as part of our on going drive to combat retail crime.

"Arrests for shop theft offences have risen over 60 per cent in the last two years as we’ve improved the way we respond to crime reports."
