Detective Inspector Stephen Ward, of CID at Staffordshire Police said: "This was a brutal and cowardly attack which left a woman with life-threatening injuries.

"Langley forced his way into the property, armed himself and carried out a sustained assault before leaving the victim fighting for her life. Thanks to the swift actions of emergency services and the determination of officers, he was arrested just a few hours later.

"I want to pay tribute to the victim for the courage and resilience our victim has shown throughout this investigation. While today's guilty plea will not undo the trauma and suffering she has experienced, I hope it provides some reassurance that Langley has accepted responsibility for his actions and will now face the consequences of his violent behaviour.

"Violence against women and girls has a devastating impact on victims, their families and communities. We remain committed to pursuing offenders relentlessly and bringing them before the courts."
