More than 600 arrested for drink or drug driving in 2026 so far - police issue bank holiday warning

Police have issued a plea to drivers this bank holiday weekend.

West Midlands Police is urging motorists to think before they get behind the wheel this bank holiday weekend, after officers made more than 600 arrests for driving under the influence.

The force has reported that since January 681 people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving offences.

The force warned that officers will be continuing their crackdown on unlawful drivers over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

A force spokesperson said: “Since January 2026, we have made 681 arrests for drink and drug driving offences, and this weekend will be no different for our officers on patrol.

“We’ll be continuing our crackdown on drink and drug drivers, and want everyone to go home and not spend the night in custody with our officers.

“While our custody suites do have beds, we’d advise you against a stay. Don’t let a split decision ruin yours or someone else’s life.”

The spokesperson added: “If you are over the drink or drug limit, you will be prosecuted and could receive a criminal record, a maximum penalty of six months in prison, an unlimited fine, and an automatic driving ban of at least one year.

“If you suspect someone to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, call 999 immediately.”
