Hundreds of suspected West Midlands drink driving arrests were made last Christmas - with 26 incidents that left people injured

Figures released by West Midlands Police have shown how hundreds of drivers were arrested over the Christmas period last year - with 26 incidents that left people injured.

Data obtained from West Midlands Police's Freedom of Information team showed a small decline in both arrests and charges made relating to drink/drug driving offences in the region when comparing December 2023 and December 2024. 

In December 2023, authorities recorded 309 arrests. By December 2024, that number had dropped to 272, marking an 11.97% decrease.

Charges followed a similar downward pattern. December 2023 saw 165 charges filed, compared to 141 in December 2024—a 14.55% decrease.

Despite declines in both categories,  the proportion of arrests leading to charges stayed mostly the same. In December 2023, 53.40% of arrests resulted in charges. In December 2024, this figure dipped only slightly to 51.84%.
