Mark Freeman, a schizophrenic, stabbed his victim Andrew Byard at an address in Trimpley Gardens in Penn on January 4 last year and due to his condition was found to be unfit to plead ahead of his trial held in December.

Following those proceedings the jury at the city's crown court found that the 55-year-old of White Oak Drive in Finchfield was responsible for committing the act of attempted murder.

At the sentencing hearing in Freeman's absence on Friday Judge Jonathan Gosling said it was a "harrowing" case.

Judge Gosling said: "I have to consider whether to impose a restriction order under section 41 of the Mental Health Act is appropriate. I have to decide if the defendant presents a serious risk of harm to the public - as such he can only be released by the Secretary of State or a tribunal. I also have to consider his antecedents."
