Watch: New bridge in Pelsall to replace historic structure taking shape
New pictures show how construction is progressing on a new bridge near Walsall.
The £3 million structure is being built in Norton Road, Pelsall, to take traffic over the Essington and Wyrley Canal.
It is being created next to the historic York's Bridge, which dates to the mid-1800s and stands near the Fingerpost pub.
In 2020, Walsall Council said the historic bridge needed to be replaced as it was "deteriorating and unsafe" and could only take a maximum weight of seven-and-a-half tons, instead of the required 44 tons.
Fresh photos taken by Express & Star photographer Tim Sturgess on Monday (June 9) shows how the new bridge is taking shape.

Workers were pictured at the site of the new bridge, which aims to provide safer route for road users, including a two-way traffic bridge and a dedicated footway.

Telford-based contractor McPhillips is currently carrying out road reconstruction and drainage work at the site.

Road closure signs could also be seen on Norton Road which remains shut off to traffic between the junctions of Charles Crescent and Nest Common until June 22, having closed on May 19.

A diversion is in operation throughout the work along the A4124 (Lichfield Road) and A452 (Chester Road North).

In a statement upon the announcement of the road closure, Councillor Adrian Andrew, associate leader of Walsall Council, said: “While I know road closures can cause disruption, we have diversion routes in place to mitigate against this as much as possible.
"The disruption will be with us for few weeks, but the improvements will be with us for a lifetime.

“The project is progressing well and I look forward to the work being completed by the end of the year.
“Every effort will be made to ensure disruption and delays are kept to a minimum and I would like to thank all residents in advance for their patience and understanding.”
