Victoria Beckham is named Woman of the Decade? Really?

She has made the transformation from Spice Girl to influential fashion designer and now Victoria Beckham has been crowned 'Woman of the Decade' at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards writes Lisa Wright.

Yes, that's right. Victoria Beckham. The ol' skeletal one herself. The former, ahem, singer. Friend of the famous one that was in Top Gun.

The woman who has only ever been caught smiling in public once – while clinging desperately to her hubby for 'not in any way set up' publicity shots after he allegedly cheated on her.

Is a woman who got famous for not being able to sing, then marrying a footballer before learning to make clothes look good on skinny people really the greatest female icon of the last 10 years?

The 39-year-old was given the gong by the women's magazine at a glittering ceremony at London's Berkeley Square Gardens last night.

There were plenty of big names there; Miranda Hart, Kylie, Ellie Goulding and, errr, Ronnie Corbett for some reason.

So again, we ask, is a woman more famed for her skinny frame, pout and penchant for sunglasses really the kind of person we should be holding up as one of the most influential people of the last decade?

In fairness to Posh, sorry, Victoria, she has gone from being effectively a background singer, to the biggest star of the girl group that invented the term 'Girl Power'.

She was more famous when she met then-Manchester United footballer husband David Beckham, but quickly fell into his shadow as his fame grew out of control.

Yes, she had to deal with the humiliation of her husbands alleged affair, not to mention the Spice Girls' disastrous reunion tour.

But would she now be the fashion designer she is, would she have found fame in the States if it wasn't for husband David's career taking them to the country?

Yes, she is talented, but I'd much prefer to admire a woman who designed clothes I could wear.

A poster girl for skinny, Beckham's clothing is clearly not designed for the average female, and her version of reality is so far removed from the everyday person that she considers it acceptable to charge £265 for a pair of flared jeans – what 'normal' woman can afford that?

Everyone loves a rags to riches story and I wouldn't want to take away any of Beckham's successes, fair play to the woman for building a multi million pound empire.

And when accepting her award, Beckham, who took 14-year-old son Brooklyn along commended her fellow females and said: "I like to celebrate women."

As do I, but how about we also look to some real role models.

Take Angelina Jolie, who uses her platform as a UN special envoy for refugees and who told the world of her double mastectomy to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer to take away the stigma for women.

Or Olympian Jessica Ennis, the Duchess of Cambridge, even the Queen who only this week is celebrating the 60th anniversary of her Coronation.

These surely are the women we should be aspiring to be, and who inspire women to look up to.
