Poll: Will you be voting in county council elections today?

Voters were going to the polls in county council elections today as the Tories waited to see whether they would lose seats to Labour or Ukip.

The Eurosceptic party has had its best ever performance in the opinion polls with around 22 per cent of people giving it their support.

The elections are a vital test for David Cameron and the coalition government as it begins to think ahead to the next general election in 2015.

Monday marks three years since the last that delivered a hung Parliament.

But four years ago when the county councils last held elections, the Tories won a massive swing from Labour.

In Staffordshire, all 62 seats are being put to the public vote. The Tories have 50 of them following a landslide win in 2009 that ended 28 years of Labour rule and left the party with just three councillors.

Labour hopes to make gains in Cannock Chase and Tamworth districts.
