The Dawn Walk will take place around Walsall Arboretum at 6.45am on Sunday, October 11, to mark World Mental Health Day this October.

The charity is encouraging people to take part whether they have used Samaritans' services, are walking in memory of someone, or simply want to show their support and help raise funds for its work.

Branch director Gill Hamer said one in four people will experience suicidal thoughts during their lifetime, but said these thoughts can be interrupted.

She said people should not let concerns about social etiquette or fear of bothering someone stop them from checking in with somebody who appears to be struggling.

"If you think someone might be struggling, whether it's a close friend or a stranger that you notice when you are out in Park Street, or the Arboretum, don't worry about social etiquette - say something to them and show that you care," she said.

"That interruption could break their negative thoughts and be the first step in helping them get the support they need."

Listening volunteer Sharon Dicken said people experiencing suicidal thoughts may appear distant, distracted or disconnected.

"Asking someone directly if they're having suicidal thoughts can give them the chance to tell you how they feel," she said.

"You don't have to be an expert, just being there to listen and showing you care can help."

She added that talking openly about suicide could help reduce the stigma surrounding the subject.

Ms Hamer said the Dawn Walk would also provide an opportunity for people to look after their own mental health while helping ensure Samaritans volunteers can continue supporting those in need.

People unable to attend on October 11 can take part virtually on a date of their choice.
