From Netherton to Oz: The Link Academy presents the The Wiz
After more than six months of preparation, The Link Academy in Netherton presented its production of The Wiz, involving more than 60 learners.
The production featured a live band, dance, and drama, providing an opportunity for learners to showcase their skills and work together. The performances highlighted creativity and collaboration, leaving a positive impression on both audiences and participants.
The Wiz is a modern retelling of The Wizard of Oz, exploring themes of self-belief, resilience, friendship and identity. These messages closely reflect the academy’s values and provided learners with meaningful opportunities to build confidence through performance. The show forms part of The Link Academy’s wider ambition to offer enriching experiences that develop cultural capital and improve life chances, in line with Dudley Academies Trust’s belief in Dreaming Big.

The performances took place between December 2-5. Over the week, more than 500 guests attended, including parents, carers, former pupils and members of the local community. Partnerships with local schools were strengthened through three daytime matinée performances for feeder primary schools, including Kate’s Hill Primary School and Blowers Green Primary School, with learners invited to attend free of charge.
The event welcomed a number of notable guests, highlighting strong community support for The Link Academy. Jo Higgins, Chief Executive Officer of Dudley Academies Trust, attended the performance on Thursday 4 December. The final performance on Friday 5 December was a special VIP evening, attended by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster, Deputy Mayor Mushtaq Hussain, Deputy Lieutenant Elizabeth Foster, and other dignitaries.

Emma Edwards Morgan, Principal of The Link Academy, said: “I am incredibly proud of our learners and staff! Our school productions never cease to amaze me, and the inclusive nature of our Performing Arts Team really shines through when you see how many learners are involved in this show. From standout vocals (backed by a live band) to captivating acting and vibrant choreography, the team really have excelled this year. I'd like to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to countless hours of rehearsals. What better way to showcase our very own Emerald City!”
Jon Morgan, Trust Curriculum Lead for Music, said: “The most rewarding part about working with so many talented learners is the continuity each show brings - you can see the legacy of what this experience brings in the picture of our two Dorothy’s, One from Year 8 and one from Y11. The decision to go with two principal casts has meant that this year's production has been the most inclusive yet and unearthed some talented learners that may well have gone undiscovered.”
