International award for 14 of Walsall’s parks and green spaces

The awards judge parks and green spaces across many factors including safety, maintenance, cleanliness, community involvement and management.

Walsall’s achievement of 14 awards is a record for the area and the most across the Black Country. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Walsall Council’s Healthy Spaces Team, working in close partnership with friends groups, litter groups, and supporting council teams to deliver and maintain green spaces of the highest quality.

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said, "This is a phenomenal achievement for Walsall, and I couldn’t be prouder of our Healthy Spaces Team and everyone who has contributed to this success.

“Securing 14 Green Flag Awards – the most in the Black Country – is a clear reflection of the hard work, pride, and partnership that goes into caring for our parks and green spaces.

“These awards show our commitment to providing clean, safe, and welcoming environments for all our residents to enjoy, and I want to thank everyone involved in helping make this possible."

Green Flag Awards have been awarded to the following locations in Walsall:

• Barr Beacon

• Blackwood Park

• Doe Bank Park

• Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve

• George Rose Park

• Kings Hill Park

• Palfrey Park

• Pelsall Common

• Reedswood Park

• Rough Wood and Bentley Haye

• Walsall Arboretum

• Willenhall Memorial Park

In addition to these accolades, two Community Awards have also been secured for:

• Barns Lane Pool

• Mason’s Fishing Pool

In recent months, work has been carried out across Walsall to keep green spaces and parks in top shape. £75,000 was used to create accessible pathways and new gates.

Funding through the Bloxwich Town Deal is currently being used to create a new play area designed by local schools at Leamore Park.

In May 2025, a new play area and gym were opened in Pleck Park. This included a range of equipment, including toddler and junior swings, a roundabout, a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, two castle climbing frames, sensory play panels and more.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
