Singer John Mayer has released his first new music in five years with the song Tom And Jerry.

The musician, 49, teased the new single for several days on Instagram before making it available on Friday.

Sharing artwork to accompany the single, he wrote: “’Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea. ‘And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you.’

“I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time – I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture.

“I can’t wait to tell you more about it.”

Mayer confirmed earlier this year he was working on a new album, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m working on the studio, I’m working on that record, and, purposely, my tide has recessed a little bit from the world.

“I’m investing all my time and energy into making a record so that when I come back out, I’ll have something to really present the world.”

Mayer’s debut album Room For Squares was released in 2001 and his most recent record, Sob Rock, came out in 2021.

He was been ranked as one of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Mayer is also known for having dated several high-profile women, including Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift.
