Reality bites in comedy theatre show

Dan Hagley's hatred for shows like X Factor has certainly given his own showbiz career a boost.

The 32-year-old from Great Barr was inspired by his dislike of Simon Cowell and penned his show Patrick and Bernadine.

After a sell-out run, Dan is returning to the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton today for one night only with the comedy before heading to The Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham from December 10 to 19. Patrick and Bernadine are a Brummie cabaret duo who drag their tired old act around British seaside resorts.

When Bernadine sets her sights towards Pop Idol stardom and decides to leave Patrick behind, the audience is let in on the more heartbreaking side of the entertainment industry. Patrick is left alone on the holiday circuit to pick up the pieces, with Bernadine's crazy mother Reen for company.

Writer and performer Dan plays the long suffering Patrick.

He says: "The first time we performed Patrick and Bernadine was three years ago and since then it has taken on a life of its own. People kept saying to us that the play would be great set at Christmas, so that is what we have done this time - and so far tickets have sold really well."

Dan has always disagreed with the way shows like X-Factor make money and entertainment out of people who are often vulnerable.

He said: "When some people go on Britain's Got Talent and X-Factor they often don't know any better and can be turned into a laughing stock.

"Also, they have to leave their old lives behind them and then return with their tail between their legs when it doesn't work out."

Eleanor Jones, 25, from Sutton Coldfield stars as Bernadine and Alison Belbin, 48, from Handsworth is Reen.

Alison says: "I think the Birmingham accent is wonderful and it is great to have it in a play where we are not parodying it – the characters are not made to sound stupid.

"There may be a few swear words, but there is nothing offensive in the play. I brought my sons along when they were aged 10 and 14 to see it."

Eleanor reveals playing a cabaret performer means there is plenty of glitter.

He said: "We all wear wigs and love our alter-egos who are fantastic characters."
