Sheep racing raises the baa

More than 200 people flocked to an open field near Wolverhampton to see 30 sheep take part in a race.

The first ever sheep racing derby, which took place in the village of Claverley, was hailed as "an amazing day" by organisers.

The event, which took place on fields off Pound Street, was the culmination of weeks of planning by the Claverley Church Flower Guild, which wanted to create a novel way of raising funds.

Each race saw six sheep compete with each other, with punters invited to take bets of £1 on who would win each 100-yard sprint from the starting pen past the finish line.

Lara Jones, aged 30, of Claverley, who attended the event with daughter Eve, aged 9, said: "This is just what we need around here, something to keep families entertained."
