West Brom still waiting on defender fitness update

Boss James Morrison faces a headache heading toward Saturday’s visit of QPR.

Albion are continuing to assess Nolan Galves after the right-back suffered a knee injury in Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Derby.

The 23-year-old summer signing had to be helped off the pitch by two members of staff early in the second half after coming off worse in a challenge with Rams winger Mo Fuseini.

Boss James Morrison later conceded it “didn’t look good” but the Baggies are still waiting to get a precise prognosis.

Galves, who had been brought off the bench after Brayann Pereira was sent-off just 34 minutes into his Albion debut, is definitely out of Saturday’s match against QPR, leaving Morrison facing a headache of who to play at right-back as his team aim to make it three wins on the spin and stay top of the Championship table.

Left-back Callum Styles deputised after Galves’ exit on Wednesday night and could do so again, while Morrison will also consider using either Chris Mepham or Nat Phillips in a wide position.

The club’s third-choice right-back, Alex Williams, joined Hibernian on loan last week.

Morrison said Pereira would “just have to deal” with the nightmare start to his Baggies career. The deadline day signing from NEC Nijmegen had been shown a first yellow for pulling back Fuesini, before then lunging into a challenge on former Albion loanee Charlie Taylor.

“He's come from a different way of playing when he was in Holland, in a different style,” said Morrison.

“They (NEC) were unique really, but I saw his attributes and sometimes you just have to throw them in and see what they're about.

“You could see Brayann's physicality going forward and his defending, but he'll take time to get used to how we do it because it's a lot different in terms of what he did in Holland.”

Albion forward Ollie Bostock has joined non-league Boston United on a four-month loan until January.

The 19-year-old’s one appearance of the season for the Baggies came as a substitute in last month’s Carabao Cup defeat at Newcastle.
