Wolves blog: The statistical team of the season at Molineux

Remarkably, 31 different players have started a match for Wolves this season.

This is probably down to the fact Walter Zenga used mainly last season's players at the start of the season, before replacing them with the hoard of summer arrivals, writes Wolves blogger Tom Tracey.

After his dismissal, Paul Lambert came in and used a mix of the two groups, along with a selection of promising young players from the Under-23 squad.

I decided to calculate, based on the average amount of points per game started in, who has been Wolves' most effective starting line-up this season.

Players who have started less than five matches have not been included, as they have not played enough to give a reasonable average.

For instance, Paul Gladon, who is rumoured to have visited Shifnal Balti more times than he has been to Molineux, has an average PPG of 0.5. This figure is only beaten by Silvio's zero, as Wolves lost all three games he started.

On the other end of the spectrum, the 'top performing' of all Wolves players this season has been James Henry, with a 2.33 PPG from his three starts. Mike Williamson and Harry Burgoyne have also achieved respectable PPG averages at two and 1.75 respectively.

Onto the players who qualify for this team – there are two goalkeepers eligible. Andy Lonergan surprisingly trumps Carl Ikeme at 1.43 PPG.

Kortney Hause is the pick of the defenders, with a 1.61 average PPG. Matt Doherty and Danny Batth both score around the 1.3 mark, while Conor Coady's 1.48 PPG makes him the highest-scoring player to have started more than 30 matches.

In keeping with Wolves' usual formation, I have chosen a five-man midfield, albeit an attacking one.

Joe Mason will have to fill in as a central midfielder with a 1.67 average, alongside a player few would have imagined to have the highest average PPG in the entire squad.

Wolves have picked up an impressive 26 points from Lee Evans' dozen games, more than two points per game. Evans has been in and out of the Wolves team this year due to injury, but his starts have coincided with Wolves three best spells of form this season.

He played in all of Zenga's early matches before suffering an injury, but came back in January during the FA Cup run. He was largely out of the team again until a recent return against Brentford.

Behind the forward are the second and third best scorers in the Wolves team, Ben Marshall and Bright Enobakhare, with 1.67 and 1.63 respectively.

After the win against Cardiff, Ivan Cavaleiro replaced Joao Teixeira and Jack Price to take the final midfield spot - there is surprisingly no space in the team for record signing Helder Costa.

Playing up front is another new signing, Andi Weimann, who has a 1.6 PPG score.

In all competitions, Wolves have achieved a total of 1.36 average points each game this season.

The players who have played most of Wolves' games this season – the likes of Dave Edwards, Helder Costa, Carl Ikeme – all understandably have averages around this mark.

But of the back five, only Andy Lonergan, Kortney Hause and Conor Coady have scored higher than the whole team average.

Disappointingly, Dominic Iorfa has a 1.13 PPG from his 23 starts, while Richard Stearman has only accrued a single point per game from his 17 starts.

While it is impossible to make presumptions based on statistics alone, it does show, as in Lee Evans' case, some players may have more influence than it appears.
